Sky Autism Support Social Action
Sky Autism Support promotes social inclusion among autistic young people and young adults in Malvern and surrounding areas and assists them to integrate into society. The organisation was a recipient of a #iwill grant to enable their autistic young people to design and deliver three events.
First, the group went on a community litter pick ending in a sociable fish and chip supper. Many of the young people said how much they enjoyed it and wanted to do it again. They also planned, prepared and delivered two fundraising events: a Summer Fete and a Christmas Fair. These encouraged involvement of group members and their families. Many dressed up, manned stalls, baked cakes, decorated the venue and interacted with the public.
All the group members worked together to make a difference in their community and raise awareness of Sky Autism Support. Lots of positive feedback was received from parents on the impact on individual members.
One young person who struggles to work in a group and articulate thoughts and emotions, worked together really well with other members. They seemed to find it easier to talk outdoors during an activity, had an articulate conversation about their autism and how it affects people differently. They said how much fun it had been and wanted to come up with more ideas for similar activities in the future.
One young male adult member arrived early on Christmas fair day asking what he could do. He’d be detailed to complete a task and return saying, “What do you want me to do now?” He stayed all day in the freezing cold and was there clearing up at the end!
Ruth Wharton, Comms, HR & Recruitment Manager said:
“Sky was delighted to receive a generous fund from #iWill … The greatest encouragement was the team spirit that blossomed as everyone played their part, whether big or small to make it happen!”
